Competition entry for the new D.Daskalopoulos Arts Building at the Athens College Campus. The concept for the new building is a large art shed: Based on Laugier’s archetypal hut, the school is envisioned as a workshop/laboratory within the large campus garden. The shed is translated into a big roof which covers the entire available plot under which the training center, the exhibition space and large open spaces are located. In this way, the two principal functions of the program (education-exhibition), while remaining distinct of each other, are expressed in a single architectural ensemble of a clearly-defined shape. Moreover, the idea of integrating the outdoor space in the building makes it an integral part of the program and also does not burden the surrounding forest area with large-scale interventions (such as cutting trees), leaving it in its original condition as much as possible. The shed/cantilever is open in its sides allowing outdoor movements and existing passages to transverse it, unifying the existing paths and creating new flows between the different levels of the surrounding landscape and the neighboring functions (church, stadiums).
